Wanted to post here about an issue a WBI user was experiencing when setting up WBI 4
When performing step #2 of the WBI testing steps http://www.ayanova.com/WBI4webhelp/wbi_server_testing.htmwhere he was testing the connection on the server, he received the error 401.1 Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. Internet Information Services (IIS)
Also tried connecting from a remote computer, and received the same error.
Had the user first ensure that the Integrated Windows authentication was checkmarked in the Authentication Methods in the Anonymous access and authentication control tab of the Default Web Site properties.
Once he did that, than remote connection was able to bring up the WBI login page, but he still received the error 401.1 Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. Internet Information Services (IIS) on the server when entering in the WBI URL in a web browser.
Did searching on the Internet for possible causes, and found this Microsoft kb page http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896861which identifies the cause as “This issue occurs if you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 include a loopback check security feature that is designed to help prevent reflection attacks on your computer. Therefore, authentication fails if the FQDN or the custom host header that you use does not match the local computer name.” and how to resolve.
