What to do if you lose your AyaNova database or want to move your database to a new server?

Below is brief outline of what to do if you lose your AyaNova database or if you want to move to a new server which is to refer to the AyaNova Online Help section on backup and restore for your configuration and version.

It’s bound to happen sometime - your server’s hard drive bites it, there’s a fire in your office, someone breaks in and steals your computers, or you need to move to a new server -> something happens that the AyaNova database is no longer available on the old server.

What do you do?

PRIOR TO ANYTHING: Because you realize how much time and money it would cost to lose your data and have to re-enter it manually, as well as the cost of lost customer service history, unbilled items, etc, you have been backing up the AyaNova database on a regular basis and taking the backup tapes/CD/DVD’s off-site every day.

IF PREVIOUSLY USING THE STAND-ALONE DEFAULT INSTALLATION:
Follow the Restore steps in the Help documentation for your version - basically it is:

  • Download the AyaNova setup file from http://www.ayanova.com/download.htm - make sure it is the same version of AyaNova that you were running such as version 4, or version 5 or version 7 etc.
  • Install the trial AyaNova on to your new computer taking the defaults
  • Run AyaNova - this will load the trial database and this is just fine, as at this point you just want to ensure everything installed correctly and the AyaNova program is running correctly.
  • Exit out of the AyaNova program
  • Restore from backup the AYANOVA.FDB file you have previously backed up before the loss - overwrite the existing AYANOVA.FDB
  • Now run the AyaNova program and confirm it is your licensed data that now is available.

These steps are detailed in the AyaNova Online Help section Backup & Restore.

For example, if using AyaNova 7, refer to http://www.ayanova.com/AyaNova7webHelp/if_using_the_stand_alone_singl.htm

IF PREVIOUSLY USING THE NETWORK FIREBIRD CONFIGURATION:

Follow the Restore steps for network Firebird Server in the Help documentation for your version - basically it is:

Download the AyaNova setup file from http://www.ayanova.com/download.htm - make sure it is the same version of AyaNova that you were running such as version 4, or version 5 or version 7 etc.
Install the trial AyaNova on to what will be your server taking the defaults
Run AyaNova - this will load the trial database in stand-alone default mode and this is just fine, as at this point you just want to ensure everything installed.
Exit out of AyaNova
Now perform the steps as outlined in your version AyaNova Online Help section for network Firebird configuration
Once you have confirmed you are successfully accessing the trial database via the network Firebird configuration, than restore your backed up AyaNova database file as outlined in the AyaNova Online Help section on restoring for network Firebird Server configuration.

For example, if using AyaNova 7 and your server is being replaced, you would follow the steps of Situation #2 of http://www.ayanova.com/AyaNova7webHelp/restoring_for_ayanova_network_.htm

IF PREVIOUSLY USING THE NETWORK SQL EXPRESS CONFIGURATION:

Perform Situation #2 of the SQL Backup & Restore steps as outlined in AyaNova 7 Help documentation http://www.ayanova.com/AyaNova7webHelp/if_using_the_network_sql_expre.htm which is basically:

  1. Perform initial steps as outlined in your AyaNova Online Help section for network SQL Express configuration
    • ensure network TCPIP communication through your network
    • Download the AyaNova setup file from http://www.ayanova.com/download.htm - make sure it is the same version of AyaNova that you were running such as version 4, or version 5 or version 7 etc.
    • install and configure SQL Express and its tools (SQL Management Studio Express)
    • set exceptions in server’s firewall for SQL

  2. Log in to the trial AyaNova database and ensure program installation successful

  3. Close out of the trial AyaNova database

  4. Restore the SQL database as per the SQL Management Studio Express approved backup program (as you would have backed up your original AyaNova database on the old server using SQL Management Studio Express)

  5. Now perform the SQL network configuration step to configure this server to access this newly restored SQL database via the AyaNova program (for version 7 of AyaNova, this is Step #6 where you edit the config.txt, etc)

  6. If there are networked computers that were previously connected, you can just replace their config.txt file, otherwise perform the last step of the SQL network configuration steps to configure networked computers

IF PREVIOUSLY USING THE NETWORK SQL SERVER CONFIGURATION:

Perform Situation #2 of the SQL Backup & Restore steps as outlined in AyaNova 7 Help documentation http://www.ayanova.com/AyaNova7webHelp/restoring_for_ayanova_sql_conf.htm which is basically:

  1. Perform initial steps as outlined in your AyaNova Online Help section for network SQL Server configuration
    • ensure network TCPIP communication through your network
    • Download the trial AyaNova installation file for yoru version from http://www.ayanova.com/download.htm and install stand-alone AyaNova trial of your version to the server
    • install and configure SQL Server and tools such as SQL Management Studio
    • set exceptions in server’s firewall for SQL

  2. Log in to the trial AyaNova database and ensure program installation successful

  3. Close out of the trial AyaNova database

  4. Restore the SQL database as per the SQL Management Studio approved backup program (as you would have backed up your original AyaNova database on the old server using SQL Management Studio )

  5. Now perform the AyaNova SQL network configuration step to configure this server to access this newly restored SQL database via the AyaNova program (for AyaNova version 7 this is Step #6 where you edit the config.txt, etc)

  6. If there are networked computers that were previously connected, you can just replace their config.txt file, otherwise perform the last step of AyaNova SQL network configuration steps to configure networked computers

Its been a while since I have backup up my data file, I am running ayanova 6 and was wondering where i would find the AYANOVA.FDB file thanks

Hi Doug

Refer to your AyaNova version online Help documentation section on Backup & Restore for your configuration (press F1 while in AyaNova to bring up your online Help documentation; select menu Help -> Contents while in AyaNova; or go to http://www.ayanova.com/onlinehelp.htm and select the link for your version of AyaNova online Help documentation)

If a question, do provide specific details on what your configuration is (stand-alone, Firebird Server, SQL Express 2008, etc) as well as details of the steps outlined in the AyaNova 6 online Help documentation so far.
